My sister, the easily entertained farm girl that she is, just brought home four of the most adorable little shetland sheep over the weekend. While she talks a good game, she really wanted them because they’re a-freakin-dorable. As a knitter, I’m completely excited, as I get all the wool to myself. So, spinning and sweaters are in my future, which gives me the shivers in glee!!
I’ve been lucky, this far, in that the recession has not hit me and my family very hard. We’re blessed to be employed, especially with specialties in public relations and graphic design. Originally, I chose to join in order to save money, as we have a large amount of debt that we’re working to pay down. That process is going painfully slowly, but we’re steadily making headway.
One of the things I find the most interesting about the recession is the wonderful back-to-basics movement that it has inspired. There has been more and more in mainstream media about growing your own food, creating your own clothes – I find it refreshing that the country is moving away from the traditional consumerist-driven mentality. I’ve learned to knit in the last six months, and I’m planning on working my way into the sewing club as well.
I hate reading about all the suffering that is going on throughout the country, and I look forward to people being able to comfortably live their lives, but the shift in attitudes is not a bad thing for America – and it’s definitely been an eye-opener for me as well.
