Stephanie-Cover-2-articleLargeYesterday I opened the Sunday Times to a very topical article that made me think about all of you.  In the Style section (the first thing I read in the paper) there is a piece about Stephanie Dolgoff, the author of a new book, “My Formerly Hot Life: Dispatches From Just the Other Side of Young” (Ballantine Books), “According to Ms. Dolgoff, women in their late 30s and early 40s fall into a “new category of person: adult ’tweens, not quite middle-aged, but no longer our reckless, restless, gravity-defying selves.” Their new moniker: Formerlies, as in formerly hot.”  O.K.  so goofy title and concept but certainly a topic we’ve been talking  all year on TGAAD.  What to wear when youre in that stage between hip and cool and older and wearing…..  You know the no woman’s land between Rock & Republic and Chico.  I am not sure the topic can fill a book but I am certainly interested in finding out.  Stephanie Dolgoff, started her concept with a blog called:http://formerlyhot.com.   Her tagling on the site is “Dispatches from just the other side of young.”  That line certainly resonates for me.  It was just yesterday that I realized that I was in fact 47 and not 27.   What does a 47 year old who thinks she’s 27 wear anyway?  I know from reading many of your blogs that that I am not alone in this quandary.  Perhaps Stephanie can shed some light on this in her book. dolgoff_formerlyhot1

One Response to “Dispatches from Just the Other Side of Young”

  1. Kathryn Fenner says:

I suggest toned-down trends– Talbot’s and Ann Taylor and Banana Republic actually do a decent job of nodding to trends, without embracing them, taking them home and then regretting spending the night with them. Hopefully as we mature, we realize that enduring beats flash in the pan.

So if it’s featured at a trendy, young person store, don’t wear it without diluting it, style-wise.

Understand that your body has probably changed shape, and even if it hasn’t, it has probably changed texture. You don’t have to hide under a burka or a muu muu, but perhaps a bit longer hem–never longer than just below the knee, though, and not so tight?

And breathe easier that every male you deal with isn’t trying to seduce you, if that were ever the case. As a wise man once counseled me during a job search–you only need one.
