A Shipment to Izzy Caught!

Ok ladies

Have had a brainwave but I’m not sure if it’s cheating and would love to know your thoughts on this.

What if we MADE our own clothes? Ok it’s a brave move (for me at least) but surely with a sewing machine and a bit of practice I could whip up something catwalk worthy in no time huh?

Ok so TECHNICALLY I would still need to buy the pattern and the fabric but I’m not actually buying the finished garment. I’m just buying a bag of fabric. And a piece of paper with a drawing on. And you can’t wear that (unless you wore the fabric as an attractive and practical shawl…). And I figured that the spirit of TGAAD is about getting creative right??

So what do you think? Is making our own clothes allowed? Am I getting creative, learning a new skill and embracing the “make do and mend” philosphy? Or am I merely strengthening my addiction?

Answers on a postcard please?!…….

Wow. That is really creative. And so NOT an option I would ever consider. I cannot even sew buttons back on very well. I guess my question is more around what are you needing to add to your closet that you don’t already have? What is the motivation behind sewing? To be creative and explore alternatives? Or just because you’re “jones-in” for something new?

    Curious to hear other POVs!

  2. I think this is a great idea!!!! Sew away, but you must send photographs!

Good question! I was wondering about this too after my mom revealed that TGAAD had nixed her Christmas plans for me (a sewing machine and sewing lessons).

I pondered the idea for a bit and ultimately decided against it. For me, buying new fabric to be made into new clothing just seemed too close to new clothes. This decision wasn’t easy – I swooned at the prospect of making trousers that brushed the floor – but it was made easier because I couldn’t think of anything I was absolutely dying to have. (This was, however, before I looked at the September Vogue.)

So, to Kerrie’s point – would the sewing be just for the sake of something new (and the high that accompanies it), or to foster creativity and resourcefulness? Or perhaps a bit of each? I think learning a new skill is a great idea, and sewing is something you would use for years to come. The question is whether it complements what you want to accomplish with TGAAD.

  4. To be honest, there is nothing that I actually need at the moment, clothes wise, I was just trying to think outside the box a bit and thought it might be a nice opportunity to learn a new skill.

It was actually something I thought about doing last year, after a particularly crafty friend of mine knocked herself up a GORGEOUS gold jacket which she wore to my wedding. Everyone commented on how lovely it was and we were all stunned that she’d made it herself. And on a subsequent trip to Hobbycraft for craft supplies (I’m a bit of a scrapbooking geek) I found myself wandering around the needlecraft section ogling sewing machines.

But sometimes the fabric and the pattern can be just as expensive as buying a high-street item of clothing. So I wasn’t sure if I was defeating the object. Would be interested to hear more thoughts on this!

I think that sewing is great! Especially if you have never done it before. This diet to me is more about changing our habits, to think more about our purchases and to make wiser choices for our wardrobe. I think taking the time and sewing something is going to give us a new perspective on what goes into our fashion favs!
