Vivienne Westwood Says Stop Buying Clothes You Know, Like Cocaine

The latest polls have closed and the Boutique wins over the Department Store 132 to 93.   Out of the 225 readers who participated in the poll the majority said they’d rather shop in a boutique than a department store.  Now if we could get all of you to tell us why we’d have a better understanding of this.  I know I prefer the boutique experience because it’s fewer items to dig through.  Often I am simply overwhelmed at the department store.  At a boutique I am usually able to focus on the items in a way that is more thoughtful.  Plus I like the idea of having something somewhat “original. “   Most of the boutiques I frequent (when not on the diet) are owned by small business owners who have an investment in the qualitly and style of each garment in their store.    I feel ike I am helping out the local economy and discovering new and original items at the same time.  You?

Totally agree with all of it, but specially the last part! I’m totally not into department stores (or malls, but that’s a different story): I love small places, walking through the city to get from one to another (and having fun talks and coffees with friends on the way, or serious conversations with myself in my mind…), the diversity of things they offer…and I love supporting “home” design of any kind – when I am in a position to do it, spending money on pieces by young Croatian designers really feels good. Actually, if there is one thing I miss while on the diet, it is that: looking for affordable, cute and original pieces by brands I have just discovered; and getting them before they sell out, because they’re either unique or produced in a limited number. But then again, there will always be more and more new interesting things to find, so I don’t miss it THAT much…

I have a hard time finding things that fit me (size-wise, and style-wise) in boutiques. I have to get petite tops, which are basically not available in boutiques. And the pants I wear are generally quite tailored–waist with a button and zipper, flat front, etc. I don’t look good in anything that makes a triangle shape. Truly. Ann Taylor works very well, but I don’t consider that a boutique, really. The cute little stores in Fremont, Ballard Ave, etc. have darling clothes but none suit me, sadly.

I don’t shop very often, but when I shop I buy a lot. A real lot. In department stores the salesladies don’t really want to go get different sizes, different colors or different styles. Sometimes in department stores the salesladies can only work in one department and you actually have to pay for your purchases at different cash registers. When I shop in a teeny place I only have to get undressed once. The saleslady fetches for me even if it takes several hours. It saves a lot of stress and time and makes the shopping experience much more pleasant.

  4. God! Tonight I feel that I cannot go on! When is this over???? All of the sudden, this diet is killing me. I want to live Sally. Please let me live.
