I’m so pleased to see so many new faces coming onboard with TGAAD and I hope this adventure will help us all to save a little money in this challenging economy.
I’m guessing that even the most frugal fashionistas among us will save a decent chunk of change by the time September 1 rolls around. SOOO, I’d like to make a suggestion…
How about if each and every one of us participating in TGAAD channels $10 of our diet “savings” (or more if you so choose) to the victims of the deadly earthquake in Haiti?
Lord knows Haitians’ concerns are so much graver than having to resist a cashmere sweater during a mall stroll. Perhaps we can demonstrate that we truly do care about more than clothing by actively doing something to help. Just think, if each of us gives just $10, we will raise over $700 for the relief effort. Perhaps that’s just a drop in the bucket given the degree of devastation there, but it’s SOMEthing.
When my husband lost his job over 8 months ago, it was certainly an adjustment for us to eliminate all vacations, cancel our movie channels, give up our second cable box, let go of our housekeeper, cancel the lawn care guy, stop all eating out, eliminate entertainment like movies and theatre and amusement parks, eliminate birthday and Christmas and anniversary presents (for my husband and I), put all household repairs and projects on hold, eliminate mani/pedis and hair salon visits, etc. But honestly, in the grand scheme of things, it’s not a huge deal. We’re making do and figuring out this new way of living as we go.
One of the hardest things to give up, however, has been our charitable giving. My husband and I have talked often about how crummy it feels to eliminate those forms of our annual “spending”… how we feel less human or less “good” because of it. Whether it’s volunteering our time with various local organizations or always buying something for the food bank when we grocery shop, we still find ways to give. But it just doesn’t seem like enough.
So, when we saw that with a quick little text you can instantly give $10 to Red Cross’ Haitian relief efforts, we simply HAD to do it. Will you join us?
Yesterday, according to the U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, over $10 million was raised via the text message fundraising campaign to help survivors of the deadly earthquake. Let’s do our part to get that number even higher!
HERE’S HOW: Simply text “Haiti” to number 90999 on your cell phone. This will automatically result in a $10 donation to the American Red Cross. The $10 will be charged to your phone bill. This program is backed by the United States State Department.
Great suggestion. I actually did this last night.
Love it – done! Two other orgs my company’s supporting: MercyCorps (water and supplies – http://www.mercycorps.org) and UNICEF (kids – http://www.unicef.org).
Ever since this disaster, I have not even bothered to log on to see what everyone was posting – I was very caught up in the news from Haiti and saddened by how little we can do to help (aside from $$) and the great contrast between what little they survive with and how much even the poorest in our nation have. So yes, it will be nice to be able to give more from the savings from our diet….
