Last week I went to the mall to do some accessory shopping and found my way into the Banana Republic sales section… I bought a silk top that I had been coveting since it first came into stores late in the summer. I broke the most crucial rule of the GAAD.
That just felt like I was in a confessional, lol.
Did the GAAD rules race through my mind? Yes. Did I feel guilty for breaking said rules? Yes. Do I look fabulous in the silk BR top? Yes.
As I mentioned, I do feel guilty over my purchase and slightly disappointed in myself for breaking down so soon, but that has been the only time. I think this Diet is a process and a learning experience and like any other diet, you slip off and get right back on track, and that is what I intend to do.
Despite that one moment of Banana Republic induced weakness, I have stuck to the Diet and have started to notice a difference in my bank account! Seeing the savings is definitely a great incentive to stay on track with this and try to eliminate other non-essentials, like magazines.
On a similar note, did anyone see this week’s Oprah “around the world” episode? How inspiring was it to how the people of Denamark live!?!?! I was so envious of the sheer simplicity of their life and how they seem to have their priorities in order. They are not consumed with stuff; they spend time and energy on family and living a life. It reminds of a quote I have on one of my favourite mugs,”Never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life”
Stacey–well I know my role is to probably slap you on the wrist and say tsk, tsk, tsk, but I won’t. Like my friend Stephanie says…replase is part of recovery (I think that’s actually from AA). Anyway, I did not see that piece on Oprah but I will look for it online and post tot he site. I love the quote ,”Never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.” Thanks for sharing that one. Hey by the way….did you take the poll yet?
Rules, schmules…..Not to enable here but….I think a large part of the point of this (at least for me!) is not to do that mindless shopping where you find yourself at a mall (or for me, Anthropologie) and the next thing you know, “that’ll be $387.53.” I have definitely seen a change in my visa bill. This weekend was the first time in two months I have ventured into dangerous territory–Marshall’s with no agenda. I ended up with a pair of shoes for one of my twins (and a very disappointed, nay peeved, other twin) some kitchen paraphenalia and a new purse. I have realized that wandering into shopping areas with time to kill is a death blow to frugality!
I have learned in these last two months that I don’t “need” anything. Really. Not a big deal. I have been entertaining more and spending time with friends and “framil” and focusing a lot less on the material side of life. It’s been really refreshing!
As for your top from the Republic of the Bananas, don’t get down about it. You scoped it out previously and resisted the evils of retail prices and waited until it went on sale–just remember to WEAR it and enjoy it!
