Did any of you catch Oprah on Monday? I don’t usually watch afternoon TV, but when I caught the promo for her shoe, accessory and handbag intervention, I had to tune in. Since these are the only items we’re allowed to purchase while on The Great American Apparel Diet, I decided I needed to be fully informed. What to/not wear? I learned a few interesting and helpful facts:
1. Always match your tights to your boots. Brown boots go with brown tights, for example. This elongates the leg. Red tights with black boots is a no-no. As is purple tights with beige boots, should any of you dream of doing such a thing. “Cross-coloring” chops your legs in half, leaving you with little sausage stumps (my words, not Oprah’s).
2. If you’re round, don’t carry a big, round bag. In other words, don’t match your Louis with your love handles. Square bag goes with round body. And novelty purses (i.e. sports team logos or kitty patterns) must be thrown out, or passed down to your eleven-year-old niece.
3. Every woman should have an all-weather, rubber boot for puddles and snowbanks. Who knew?
If you haven’t seen the show, check it out online.

Izzy, I usually tape Oprah and watch about 1 out of 10 (the others are deleted!) but I did watch this one. I thought the whole bra thing was a good reminder of the difference quality underclothing can make–and felt like, hey, I need to go bra shopping. But I so did NOT get the big impact the different shoe styles supposedly were making for the women’s figures. . .other than what you documented: the tone on tone issue.
I saw this show and if I didn’t sign up for this Diet, I would have went out the next day and bought everything that was mentioned and probably would have bought other things I wouldn’t need just because they were on sale. Then I would have come home and realized I already have most of the items that was mentioned and donate the old ones which I have only worn once. This is the cycle of madness!!!
For the Diet, I am going to not buy any thing related to clothing and see if I can use all the items I already own.
BTW, when I did check my closet, I already had most of the things Oprah mentioned….
