Back in August, I was asked if I wanted to join TGAAD. Stephanie and Jenny were joining – did I want to join, too? I swiftly declined. It struck me as being too big of a sacrifice. But after a couple of months of contemplation and reflection, I decided to join after all. I realized that my relationship to buying clothes had become more complicated than being need-based. Yes, I know – welcome to the club. As a therapist, I am always fascinated by the reasons for behavior and am always interested in doing things to affect behavior that no longer serves the greater self. So, here I am.
As penance for my initial reticence, I intend to continue for a full year, despite the option to stop on September 1, 2010. I also plan to avoid buying shoes as well.
I am beginning my official apparel diet on January 1st. And I admit that it is in part because there are a few things I need before going all in if I am to have any hope of getting through the year. I lost some weight this summer and have hardly any clothes that fit me, and tailoring is difficult to get right when every aspect of a pair of pants needs to be altered. But, I am doing my final shopping with a strict list that I made, reviewed, and have held to wholly and completely: 1 pair of jeans, 2-3 pairs of work pants, 2 sweaters, 1 white blouse, 2 camisoles, 2 tee shirts, and a pair of yoga pants (inspired after reading Sally’s post on her own yoga pants despair). I didn’t want my last fling to fly in the face of the purpose of the diet. And, I managed to get everything very much on sale, though only found one pair of work pants.
I will certainly be up for swapping and look forward to following the journeys of my fellow dieters.
Jennifer, welcome aboard. Your yogi mates will be thanking you for your nice new yoga pants. You are in good company! Only a few more days until it’s cold turkey! Kudos on the shoe thing.
Welcome!
