Oh Boy…What a Mess I Created! Success after longest trip
Jul 06

O.K. I am just sayin’. I think the diet is over for me September 10th, is that right Sally? But the deal is, and I am telling you now, I will be in New York on September 1st and I am going shopping. I am going shopping! And I am going to buy clothes, dammit. I ran into Stephanie Greco on my walk this morning, and we are both so done with this. Also, I went to a CEW (cosmetics executive women’s group) in NYC last week and I got a swag bag. The speaker was Bobbi Brown, so there was all this lip gloss from her, and a gift card for Hautelook.com So I used it on a bra, a camisole, and….pajamas. Are pajamas cheating? I will be breaking out of this on September 1st, 2010. Just sayin’.

Stacya, you are only 54 days away, pipe down! You can make it. My mom unloaded a bunch of fabulous apparel to me last week while I was in San Diego, you are certain to get a few items along the way. S

I just heard about GAAD today. Reading the front page here, none of these posts are very encouraging for someone interested in making the attempt. Almost all of them are about shopping with a “@^$# this diet” message. Why is that?

So…the whole concept has been lost here….superficiality rules. The survey that asks “what is the first thing you will buy when the diet is over” says it all. There is no option to answer “nothing”

Do you realize that diets only work if you change your lifestyle? How about a clothing exchange party instead of shopping? Were any lessons learned by the “dieters”? They all seem superficial….I am surprised this website is full of ads by Nordstrom, Gap, etc. I find it disheartening and disappointing.

  4. Katie, I would encourage you to try to not buy clothes for 12 months. What will be great about it is the experience YOU have. If you don’t like shopping, it will be easy for you. I love shopping, so it was harder for me. I will be shopping differently after this, but that is my perspective. You will have your own. What I don’t like is people pushing their views on me, that somehow because I love shopping in New York that makes me superficial. What I am growing tired of is the puritanical views that are so aggressive. You might enjoy things that I find intolerable. I would never go online and cowardly accuse someone of being superficial. Why don’t you come over and meet me in person?

The truth is, you don’t know anything about me or why I decided to join this group and do this for a year. And if you do it someday, I will not really know what motivates you. I am tired of self-righteous, humorless people who suck the joy out of life. Yes, that is how I perceive you at this moment.

Note to all dieters and commenters (and Sally),

Unfortuanately a broken computer has prevented me from posting for eons, but I just wanted to say (and yes I am technically still “on” it) first of all, congrats to all dieters for making (what all clothes lovers know is) a huge effort to pause and explore the idea of not buying new things. To Sally: bravo on coordinating this whole thing.

And just a quick comment on beauty… One of the reasons I personally love new clothes (whether I’m shopping at Barney’s, or my local consignment shop) is that moment when you see a color whose saturation and tone takes your breath away, or the elegant drape of silk cut on the bias, or anything quirky and fun that reminds you of who you really are- You. And you fall in love. And so some of us fall in love more often than others… I think it’s not such a bad thing.

I think what I’m trying to say is we all need a little more love in our lives. The world needs a little more, in my humble opinion. Those of us who may have been a teeny bit hedonistic when it came to shopping in the past, I think (after this experiment) will be more likely to dine like a francaise… To take each item to hold it to the light and savor the feel, to appreciate quality. This is what will satisfy now. This is very Now.

    What can I say… I’m an optimist.
