Cheater, Cheater Pumpkin Eater…. NY Times Article on Shoe Sales

Themeof the Week ResizedI know some people cannot fathom spending a lot of money on jeans.  I for one, however, think it’s perfectly reasonable—in fact I would say, if the pants fit, buy them!   Here’s where I’m going with this.  I wear jeans nearly every day of my life—to work, to school, to parties and yes even to church (that’s how we roll in Seattle).  So when I posted the poll (see the poll to the right) about the most expensive apparel purchase I was surprised to see that most of the respondents said a dress.  I would bet all the money I am going to save on the TGAAD that many of us wear our jeans far more often than we wear our expensive dresses that collect dust in the back of our closets.  In fact, if I amortize the cost of my $200 jeans, I now have it down to below a penny a wearing.  Now that’s an investment I can stand by.   How much is that sequined number costing you per event?

Women are completely weird about their jeans.  And they should be if they are wearing them as often as I do.  I figure that once I find the perfect pair, the ones that solve my “athletic” thigh problem and my small waist dilemma and don’t make me look like a suburban mom or a teenage hooker it doesn’t matter what they cost!  I’ll pay just about anything.

While I love wearing jeans, they’re like pajamas, buying them is another thing. Imagine taking a hot poker and stabbing yourself in the eye eleven times.  Now multiply that by 13 and you know what I mean when I say it’s torture.  This will seem like perfect dribble to you girls with the perfect J.Crew boy body (long legs and no hips) but let me tell you, I’d rather shop for a bikini than a pair of jeans…need I say more?  So when I find a pair that fits, contemplating the expenditure is moot.  Oh yeah, and on top of the small fortune I have to pay for the said jeans, I also have to factor in the additional expense to cut off the extra foot of fabric at the bottom and have them hemmed, (who’s the fit model anyway, Gabriel Reece?).

Maybe I am missing the point of your “diet” but talking about stuff that you love, but can’t buy is sort of like being a real diet and talking about cake or ice cream. I have sat and read over some of these posts and I commend you all, but I guess I don’t get why you would want to torture yourself.
The folks that do the “compact” (otherwise known as buying nothing new for a full year) have come up with some great solutions.
One thing that really helps in not buying new items is to get inventive about what you already have.
Or take what you have and have a clothing swap to get new items, thrift stores, estate sales, crossroads trading or the like.

i agree, finding jeans that fit is HARD and is worth the price you have to pay.
