Goodbye Meredith, Ann and Ellen. Hello Larry King Yom Kippur, New Shoes, and Doing a Mitzvah
Sep 25

Well, OK, maybe not a full 1,000. Seriously, how many black pants and skinny jeans does one woman need? I’m jumping into this with both black-clad legs, because the idea of thinking creatively within what we already have: What a great metaphor for pretty much everything in our lives right now. Still, this is going to be a challenge. One pal is a CAbi hostess, so I’ve been known to scoop up whole seasons full of new duds in an afternoon (for reasonable, if not cheap). And, sadly, I don’t seem to have that shoe or bag “thing” other women have to otherwise pacify me.

So, ladies, I’ll be seeking your feedback on some of the new combos and looks I’ll be fishing out of the back of the downstairs closet. (And how do you freshen up those crop tops from 5 years ago? Anyone?)

  1. What is a Cabi? What have I been missing? The cropped tops. Sew a fancy little ruffle on the bottom. Or, layer on top of a long turtleneck. Or, donate to a kid’s store. S

Oh, CAbi is a rocking experience (though I’m going cold turkey now for a year). It stands for Carol Anderson by Invitation, and it’s an in-home shopping party featuring the designs of Carol Anderson, who once was lead designer for Nordstrom. I’m not much for shopping parties, but these are a blast–clothes are cute and versatile, and there’s a Loehmann’s aspect I love, with perfect strangers grabbing, say, a wrap tank and foisting it on another partygoer, saying, “Oh m GOD, this would look so cute on you, go try it on!”

There are reps in Seattle, though my friend lives in Corvallis and would make a weekend of coming up…sigh-drool. But it’s OK–she and I will get together for other, less spendy activities.

I *love* the idea of sewing a little ruffle along the bottom of a top–another friend just recommended layering a superlong tank underneath as an alternative too. My homework for this weekend!

Anne: I just discovered CAbi over the last year and love the line, especially the unique details and cool lining on coats!

Plus, your 1,000 black pants really hits home for me. The realization that I have way too many black pants in my closet is what pushed me over the edge to join in on the diet. I figured. . .okay, here is something I could use some time for reflection. I mean, truly, how many pairs of black pants does one need? I still don’t have an answer.

Kerrie, I’m with you — can we indulge just a moment in some CAbi porn to drool over some of those coat details? I have an embroidered one from a couple of seasons ago, with splashes of blue, green and gold, and an olive-green velvet sash I keep tied behind. It doesn’t *sound* like anything I would ever wear (Prince, anyone?), but I love it, and every time I wear it people compliment it; several strangers have asked to try it on.

But! We must be strong, though I have yet to gain my focus. I’m going to read your posts right now for inspiration. I’m going to a wedding tonight (yay!) and I of course have things to wear but, coff, coff, may have picked up a few stray pounds here and there. Last year’s solution: Run up to Sweetie or Carmelita. This year: Think creatively, and perhaps an extra pair of Spanx.
