I’m a late comer to the diet, but heard about you all in the Seattle Times and I am happy to be here. Almost seems like we should be calling this The Great Unamerican Apparel Diet…since it competely flies in the face of our American ideas surrounding material needs and wants! We have an ongoing friendship with visiting medical students from Sudan, who are studying at the UW for a semester, and nothing brings this point home more than comparing our lifestyle to theirs. We took two of these friends out for dinner recently, and they commented that the complimentary glasses of water we received upon sitting down at our table were the size of a serving an entire family would share at a meal in their country. It was such a powerful example of the different mentality between the beliefs and practices of citizens from a developed and a developing country–over WATER, no less. I’m still thinking about that…
