reinventing my look Guilty Pleasures
Jan 07

for I have sinned, and I haven’t even posted my first blog yet!  I wandered across the diet early on (last October!) and decided right away that it was something I needed to do. I’m a devotee of Target and the Gap, and have a weakness for their darling little sweaters and t-shirts.

But all good things must come to an end, and I committed myself completely – no clothes, and only essential shoes, unmentionables, etc for one year.  Goodness knows I didn’t need any more things in my collection!  And I was doing great! Going gangbusters!

Until…

My sister decided to take me along to a cow show.  In Denver.  In January.

I cheated for the sake of a super-clearance, $7 barn coat. And while I felt bad for a minute… it was needed.

But, like the rest of the ladies here, it amazes me how much energy I put into clothing before.  Looking at displays of things I didn’t really need, and spending money I didn’t really have. It’s liberating and wonderful to shed that mindset, and focus on reading, knitting, writing, and just LIVING!

It’s wonderful to go on this journey with you all.

That is one thing I hadn’t really thought too much about – the energy spent finding that perfect “whatever” that exists in your mind but not in any store you have had occasion to explore… and then after you expended all that energy – gave up and made do – your world didn’t really crumble and life went on…. how did having “the perfect outfit” ever get to be such a defining part of who we are? I went on this diet because of our rampant consumption of “stuff” but never really thought of the energy I have been wasting in pursuit of having more stuff… a real aha moment here..

You can give something to the goodwill this week as penance. :)

BTW – are gloves cheating? Needed some new ones as my two year old black gloves were getting a little thin…they were on sale…. underwear for my hands???

I think everyone is willing to forgive :-D …especially since you blogged about it and shared your experience with us all! I’m thinking that many of us will have moments of weakness over these next 8 months (especially as the seasons change) and it’s good to hear how others are coping with their slips.

I’m sending a whole bag of things to Amvets later this week. ;)

And it is a good question, Sherry – when did all of this consumerism become “important?’ Like you say – the world doesn’t end when we don’t have the exactly perfect outfit. Someone posted earlier about using their current closet for a New Year’s Eve outfit – and she totally survived :)
