Mad Men Wedding Shoes and Temptations of Orange Yellow and Blue

My mom called the other day to report that her co-worker had been following the blog (yay!). Her co-worker’s inquiry – is this ridiculously tall woman with three kids perchance related to you? – led mom to take a peek at the site, which then led to a lengthy conversation about clothes, money, and consumption.

My mother has always been the Platonic ideal of motherhood, so I wasn’t surprised to find her supportive of Sally’s experiment, and the collective commitment of the group. I was surprised, however, to learn that she had been considering something similar. Nothing as formal: more like a reassessment of her spending habits and consideration of what she actually “needs”. And, when I have mentioned the diet to others, I have received the same response. With the economy being, well, the economy, many women I know have dialed back on their spending. And they don’t intend to ramp it up again anytime soon. So, rather than being un-American (a charge that Sally debunked earlier), this little venture is a good indication of where much of the country is today. Stepping back a bit, thinking more,  realizing that what we have is plenty, and appreciating the treats – handbags, scarves, gifts – when we get them.

I’m curious to see how other friends and family members are reacting.  Am I somehow hanging with a super frugal group, or is this typical?
