Okay, here’s where I start! Socks on up…. The Empress Wears No New Clothes

So, aside from steeling me against the post holiday sales and helping me to rediscover some inhabitants of my closet (the ten year old skirt worn to work earlier this week), the diet has led me to become merciless with my clothing. I figure that, if I haven’t worn it in the last 4 months, it really doesn’t belong with me. This has resulted in some aggressive culling of elderly workout gear, which is actually also a public service. It also led me to propose an adoption with respect to a truly lovely dress that I should not be wearing. It is a grey Banana Republic silk dress, sleeveless with vertical pleating and a gathered waist. I bought it on the spur of the moment for an anniversary dinner with my extremely supportive husband, who said he loved it but was probably lying. I wore it then, and once more recently, after losing the weight I figured would make it look better. Well, the pounds are gone but the dress still isn’t working for me. So, I wanted to see if any of you TGAADers might adopt it. If one of you can use it I’d feel better about my impulse buy. BR size 12, hits at the knee (well, my knee, so likely just below the knee for most). Just let me know.

On a semi-related note, I also Thred-ed Up and was underwhelmed. My first match was a purple (fine with me) Velvet shirt. That’s a brand I like, so I was pretty excited as I pulled it out of the envelope. Unfortunately, further inspection revealed some “welcome to your third trimester” styling. Yick. It’s so bad, I am reluctant to re-Thred it. I have two more matches and will see what those yield, but am not optimistic. I suppose it reflects the fact that I am not interested in clothes, period, but in clothes I like. And it may be hard for a Harvard Business School project to predict the latter.

  1. Kristin, nice to see you back and so wonderful that you have started an adoption program…I love it. Regarding thred-up. I think women are just too darn picky. At our clothing swap we all took time and effort to try on other people’s clothes. Truly, out of about 100 pieces only three really looked good on me and I think the other women would concur–it wasn’t easy finding the perfect match. That said, what are the chances that a random person you don’t know will send you something you like and want. I think in theory thred-up is wonderful I’m just not sure women are the perfect candidates. Too many unknowns for me.

I love doing clothing swaps with friends in my neighborhood, but thredUp sounds like a good idea. I have such an unusual size and so many things look so bad on me, I’m not sure how I would fare either. Have you heard of anyone else trying the site and having good luck?

Usually, i have to save my trades for my sister. We have some similar tastes but not always similar sizes. But if you’re looking for a home for the BR grey dress, I sometimes am a 12 in their dresses and happy to give it a try for a new home. :-)

Kerrie: I’ll send it to you. Sally, can you perhaps send me Kerrie’s email offline (or her mine), so we can coordinate?

Sally: you’re right – we ARE too picky. I received my second match the other day and was again disappointed – a Michael Stars bolero thingy that actually made Eric laugh when I put it on. It’s not terrible – it’s just not right for me.

Elizabeth: most of what I’ve heard has been underwhelming, but they continue to gain steam, so it must be working for someone. I’m also atypical when it comes to sizing, so I may not be totally representative.
