My sister and niece came to town this weekend. The plan was to meet them with Mom after work Friday for a girl’s dinner. When I arrived at the Del Mar Plaza, where did I find them? Browsing through the Black & White store!
My niece was having fun trying on sunglasses and earrings; something I could’ve easily participated in as well. But I knew—if I stayed in there with them, engaged in girl talk, browsing the racks together, watching my sister try things on as she hunted for an early birthday present from Mom—I was going to be seriously tempted. So, I did the only rational thing a dieting girl can do. I took my niece to the outdoor bar, overlooking the Pacific Ocean and treated us to bubbly drinks, one Shirley Temple and one lovely glass of Prosecco. My sister, Katie, ended up with an adorable top with great cigarette-style black pants. And, yes, I was envious. Left over sibling rivalry? Or, just the first real temptation: deciding to stick to the diet and not spend my money on clothes, surrounded by cute new fall fashions?! Luckily, enjoying a glass of bubbly and one-on-one time with my beloved niece was much more fulfilling and fun. This time around, I was easily and happily able to avoid temptation.
You go gir!
Distractions are good, especially when they involve food or a good drink! A night out or a new outfit? The time with friends may be long remembered, when a new outfit may just retreat to the back of your closet. Good choice.
