Jill Dickinson is 38, mother of two, a yard sale crazed, dumpster diving zealot and thrift-store addict. Self-named “Goodwill Jill” she has been on the fashion freeze for almost a decade as her husband ran software start-ups. Never a fashionista, always a trend or two behind, some day you may picture her in the “what not to wear” section of a fashion magazine. This being so, she sticks to jeans and boots as her daily routine and will almost never be seen in heels. “I love clothes and I can’t get my nose out of the magazines at the gym indulging in the pictures,” she says with a laugh, “but with my husband’s preoccupation with spending all of our money on stuff like office equipment and other people’s paychecks I just haven’t been able to release my inner spendthrift!” Stay-at-home mom and writer on the side, she really thought this would be her year for clothes. But then she ran into Sally! This fashion starved mom now admits that her life of saying “No” to buying clothes for all these years was like Bootcamp for The Great American Apparel Diet (“who woulda thought!”) and testifies that “if a mom can endure years of sleep deprivation, mommy hormones gone awry, bad hair days at school pick-ups and endless Hanna Montana episodes, surely she can undergo a year of not giving into material madness. I know moms and they have the guts, the willpower and the stamina to do this diet and I’m in!”
