Ann, 58 and not believing it, is a (single, divorced) university English professor in Texas. For 37 years, she has been rewarding herself for losing her freshman 15+ by buying something new at least once a month, whether she needs it or not. Now, Ann is a smart shopper. She almost never pays full price, buys well-made classics that last, and frequents consignment shops. But she's addicted to acquisition, as if by storing up a wealth of size 6 slack, skirts and tops, she is preventing the freshman 15+ from returning to her waist and thighs. Poor, pathetic woman. She really can't afford that monthly shopping trip -- do you know how little English professors make? In 2008 Ann cut back her spending by popping all clothing sales receipts in an envelope in her closet and tallying them at the end of the year. What an eye-opener. In 2009 she was able to moderate her habit without keeping such close tabs -- she'd go shopping and not buy anything, for example. Or, after resisting a sale at a favorite boutique, she'd buy some minor item at a thrift store. Like giving the lab animal a pebble instead of an M&M. Now she'd like to graduate to near-total indifference (except for the underwear). Is that possible? Wouldn't achieving that state bring the weight on, make her look her age, turn her into a total sloth? It's a good thing she discovered this site with only one month to go on the year. One month without shopping, Ann thinks, is do-able. And yet, and yet . . . her birthday is next week, and she always treats herself . . . argh, what timing!
