So the serious angst I am having lately is over the Diet – that is, my modified version of the Diet.
Here’s the full story: When I signed up for this clothing celibacy, I asked Sally if I could still buy second-hand/yard/thrift. She said – “for you, yes.”
Great. Perfect. I’ll do it.
Next, I sent her my quickly-penned bio and a sorry little picture of myself with “Bellevue hair.” Sorry Bellevue. And then I signed my year away with TGAAD, not feeling very clothing-deprived frenzied because I knew when the retail therapy urge hit I could just get my kicks shopping second-hand.
I told someone about the diet yesterday and then admitted my thrifty loophole and they said it was cheating. Well, is it? I mean, some of you shopped before the diet started to get on track for the year. Others, like myself, are not buying new, but adding an occasional element back into the closet collection when it comes around second-hand. I haven’t bought any new apparel since I entered the diet (not even underwear).
So, this is where the guilt kicks in: I have still been going to a few yard sales since September, chasing down some rather appealing clothing scores. At one, I dunked over 150 dollars just into the clothes. Enough of that, so here’s the real meat: after that particular clothing yard sale orgy of sorts, I proceeded to email the friend who had the yard sale and asked if she had more clothes left! And, oh yes (thank you, dear mother of mercy) she coughed up more of her closet for me! I got some True Religion and Rock & Republic Jeans, Juicy Couture, Rayure of Paris, Diane Von Furstenberg…blah, blah, blah. So, I keep buying clothes…not overboard in my view and they’re also second-hand. Someone else purchased them first and they’re not new. But I still feel guilty. Is this cheating? (please say NO)
Hey Jill
I’m confused now. I was told by Sally that I COULDN’T buy from second hand stores as it was a “no money changing hands” rule!
Sally??? Can you clarify? I DO hope there hasn’t been any favouritism and special treatment here??!!!

Well there are two women on the diet who said they couldn’t do it unless they could buy consignment or yard sale. I made this one exception. Technically there is NO BUYING. No exchanging of money. If you decide to do the second hand thing then you are….well not fully on the diet. Of course gifts and borrowing are o.k. The consignment/tag sale thing, in my mind is like drinking beer but claiming to be in an alcoholics anonymous group. I don’t want to make anyone feel guilty. These women would have not joined unless they could do a little consigning, yarding on the side. I am not an advocate but I did let them slink in.
aaaaah, I see. Well I’ll stick it out then!
Damn it! Thought I’d found a loophole!!
