As those in Seattle can attest, fall has arrived. The clouds are rolling in, the wind is up, and anything in the mid sixties seems balmy. So yesterday, I pulled out some heavier sweaters. I was a bit giddy as I cracked open the container and reached for my nubby oatmeal quasi poncho (which sounds terrible, but really is not) – the prospect of seeing clothes that had been hibernating for the last five months was exciting. I located my sweater, pulled it out, put it on, and found A MOTH HOLE. AAAAAAAAGH! The last day of August, I had a dream that all my stored sweaters were shredded by moths, and now one such sweater had been chewed. AAAAAAAGH, indeed. When I stopped hyperventilating, I got mad. Armed with a box of Kleenex, I flung open the closet door, ready to squash any moth or moth like creature that had the misfortune to cross my path. I found (a) the cat, whom I chastised for failing to make moth proteins part of her diet and (b) a spider, which escaped squashing only after I considered its moth consuming potential. I then spent the better part of an hour pulling out other inhabitants of what was now known as the moth bin and scrutinizing them for signs of chew. Although the culprits seemed to have escaped, my remaining sweaters appeared unscathed. Perhaps the moth was commenting on my choice of the quasi poncho.
After putting the closet back together, I pulled on my sweater and asked the twins for an inspection. “Kids, do you see any holes in mommy’s sweater?” They peered, squinted, and worked mightily to look as if they were thinking about it. “Nope. But those buttons are kind of funny.” Thank you, Nina and Michael. So he sweater stayed, I yanked on my boots, and we all headed out into the blustery Seattle morning to stock up on cedar balls.
Can you put a brooch over the holes? If not can you patch them with lace? Bottons, or a patch? Your friends will think you have hit on a new trend. Tell them you bought the sweater at Chanel and they will whisper behind your back that you probably paid too much and brush it off as a unique new CoCo design.
